Bongs

Bongs are a popular smoking tool thanks to their ability to filter and cool the smoke. There are several different varieties of bongs with specific features that can enhance the experience. Bongs are versatile and effective tools for smoking that can be customized according to different needs and preferences. 

The percolator is an important part of many modern bongs, whose function is to further filter and cool the smoke. A percolator works by forcing the smoke to pass through small holes or slots that create more bubbles. This increases the surface area of contact between the smoke and the water, allowing better filtration of harmful substances and cooling the smoke more effectively.

There are several types of percolators, for example

- Showerhead percolator - Has a rounded shape with small openings, creating an even and soft filtration.

- Tree percolator - Consists of several “branches” with small openings that provide a high degree of filtration.

- Honeycomb percolator - Has small round holes that provide an intense bubble formation for maximum smoke filtration.

Regardless of the type used, the main goal is to make the smoke less irritating to the throat and lungs.

The kickhole, or 'carb hole' as it is sometimes called, is a small hole usually located on the side of the neck of the bong. Its function is to regulate airflow during inhalation. When the hole is covered, the chamber fills with smoke, and when it is released, the airflow increases rapidly, causing the smoke to rush up the tube. This makes it easier to get a more powerful and faster hit. Kickholes are not necessary for a bong to work, but for those who want more control over their inhalations, it can be a useful feature.

Another popular feature on many bongs is the ice stop. This is an indentation or stop in the glass tube where ice cubes can be placed without falling into the water. As the smoke passes through the ice, it cools further, making for a much smoother inhalation. The cold smoke is more gentle on the throat and lungs, and many users appreciate this feature especially during longer smoking sessions.

Cooling the smoke is central to a gentle smoking experience, and in addition to percolators and ice stops, there are other ways to improve the cooling of the bong. Some bongs have special cooling systems, such as spiral tubes that spin the smoke around and cool it before it reaches the user. Other methods include using coolant capsules or simply putting the bong in the freezer before use, which cools the glass and thus the smoke effectively.

The cup size, i.e. the bowl in which the material is placed and ignited, also varies greatly depending on the user's preferences. Smaller cups are often preferred by those who want to take small, controlled puffs or those who use their smoking utensil alone. Larger cups are better for those who want to take larger inhalations or use the bong in social settings. Having a cup with a removable neck can also provide flexibility if you want to switch between different sizes.
